Special Interview with Wang Yannan: She talks about her father, Zhao Ziyang
Wang Yannan said that during the fifteen years of her father's house arrest, authorities from the Communist Party implemented all kinds of restrictions and surveillance on her father's activities: "For the first three years, he was allowed to go out of the house perhaps only one time. Later, he was able to put in a request whenever he wanted to go out. Most of the time, the authorities did not approve for him to travel to the places he wanted to go, but they did allow him to go to some of the places. His activities were restricted while he was in places outside Beijing." Wang Yannan said that if people wanted to visit Zhao Ziyang, they had be questioned and approved by government officials first.
Wang Yannan also recalled that in daily life, Zhao Ziyang kept himself busy. He was very optimistic, usually reading and writing calligraphy, and also watching TV shows. He also kept a puppy, and the puppy stayed with him throughout the 15 years of house arrest. Wang Yannan said that one major characteristic of her father was that he was not willing to trouble other people; for example, some of his original subordinates, especially those who still held their positions, wished to visit him, but were usually advised about the disadvantages of doing this and subsequently were influenced not to visit him.
When talking about Zhao Ziyang's faith, Wang Yannan said that her father always believed that the government should deal with and solve the problems concerning democracy and law. In the student movement issue, he persisted in taking the responsibility for what had happened and opposed the use of arms to suppress the students. "He did not regret what he had chosen. In fact, he felt that he did not have a choice; he would go down, or he would take responsibility for what happened. He chose to be responsible for what had happened."
