Discussion: A Controversial Trademark

Discussion: A Controversial Trademark
Host: Not long ago, a European company applied to the European Union to use a trademark with the typeface "NOT MADE IN CHINA." The European Union stated that they would need to deliberate about the regulations of the relevant procedures before they could decide if they would approve the application. This matter has led to strong negative repercussions in China. In today's program "Audience Mailbox," let's hear some opinions from the audience.
Mr. Shi from Jiangsu: It seems that some Europeans feel an imbalance about the mounting Chinese commodities surging into Europe, and so they have come up with the "NOT MADE IN CHINA" trademark. It looks as if it comes from a European-centered superiority complex where "Made in Europe" means high standards and high quality, and "Made in China" means low standards, low class, which also has an impact on their market. They claim that "NOT MADE IN CHINA" will not harm the interests of the Chinese public. However, I find that to be a very thin statement.
Mr. Wu from Liaoning: This is what I think. I think the US and some European countries cannot compete with China with their commodities. Why? The labor cost of Chinese products is comparatively lower. It costs very little to hire workers and there is absolutely no guarantee of work and no insurance, whereas European countries pay higher wages to their workers. I think the trademark "NOT MADE IN CHINA" certainly has its advantage to other countries. Why? It can bring balance to the commodities markets of every business group and country.
Mr. Tu from Jiangxi: It doesn't matter if the company is doing this to gain profits. The trademark "NOT MADE IN CHINA" -- this reflects the fact that China's level of manufacturing and national power seem not so great in the eyes of other countries. In my opinion, if China really wants to stop such things from happening, it should make sure it improves its own production technology.
Mr. Zhang from Chongqing: In my opinion, it is actually not a big deal to use such a trademark in marketing. However, it is not proper etiquette. If Chinese products are competitive, it doesn't matter what others use to market their products. It won't make a difference.
Mr. Zhang from Shanghai: Being a Chinese citizen, I am patriotic, but if I have sores on my head, I won't say I am "as gorgeous as a peach blossom." "Made in China" means pirated edition, fake and of poor quality. It means the hardship and bitter tears of laboring people as well as people undergoing reeducation and reform through physical labor.
Mr. Li from Hebei: The quality of the commodities China exports to the world is not bad because it meets the quality standard. Therefore, in my opinion, this has nothing to do with the quality being good or bad. I think the applicant may have his unique opinion. He may have his own understanding of the country of China itself. On the other hand, China really has a huge influence. After all, someone has come up with a "NOT MADE IN CHINA" trademark.
