Thinking of working in the U.S. Foreign Service? Did you know that although you are not required to know a foreign language in order to become a Foreign Service Officer, proficiency in one or more languages will enhance your competitiveness for selection?
The ILR scale is a set of descriptions of abilities to communicate in a language. It was originally developed by the Interagency Language Roundtable, which included representation by United States Foreign Service Institute, the predecessor of the National Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC). It consists of descriptions of five levels of language proficiency, and is the standard grading scale for language proficiency in the Federal service.
