In Tuesday's (November 5, 2002) mid-term election, there were dozens of Asian Americans running for a variety of public offices, including governors' [positions], the U.S. House of Representatives, and state legislatures. Among them, Washington State Governor Gary Locke and Congressman David Wu, both of Chinese descent, won their re-elections by vast majorities.

In Tuesday's mid-term election, twenty-some Chinese American candidates claimed victory in various elections. The most noticeable ones among them were incumbents Governor Gary Locke of Washington State and Congressman David Wu, the first Chinese Americans in their respective positions in America's history. David (Zhenwei) Wu was born in Hsin-Chu (or Xinzhu), Taiwan in 1955 and immigrated to California along with his parents when he was six. After graduating from Stanford University, Wu enrolled in the Harvard Medical School. But later, when he became interested in law and political affairs, Wu gave up on medical studies and moved on to studying law at Yale University. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998 as the first Chinese-American Congressman.
* 超越党派 *
* Impartial and Bipartisan *
"Congressman Wu was re-elected primarily because he worked very hard to represent the interests of his Oregonian constituents in an impartial and bipartisan manner," explained Ms. Jennifer Helburn, spokesperson of the Office of Congressman David Wu. Congressman Wu is dedicated to addressing Oregon's main issues, such as education and economic development. He has also gained wide support from Chinese Americans across the nation. Helburn said that voters particularly respect Congressman Wu for his courage in being adamant about what he believes in. For example, when House Representatives were casting their votes on whether the U.S. should attack Iraq, Wu voted no.
* 坚持观点 *
* Determined and Persistent *
Helburn articulated: "Whether or not his constituents agreed with his vote, many expressed approval of what he did. People would like to see representatives who are willing to stand up for and be adamant about their own perspectives and positions. There are politicians who seem to be always watching how the wind will blow and sailing with the wind accordingly. What voters expect from the elected representatives, though, is to take a solid stance of right vs. wrong and fight for it without worrying about the consequences in their political lives."

* The Third Term *
Congressman Wu is critical of the Chinese government regarding certain issues concerning China. He voted against the U.S. granting China the Permanent Normal Trade Relationship. It was reported that some Chinese organizations and businessmen with close business relationships with China were dissatisfied with his position and brought forth certain pressure on him at the beginning of his campaign. The re-election of Congressman Wu means he will begin his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. His congressional district is not necessarily a safe ground for the Democrats because of the well-matched challenges that the Republicans have always brought forward. In this election, however, Congressman Wu did not encounter any tough competition from his Republican counterpart.
